LightWave 3d: The Commute Scene Files

A few scenes using a variety of techniques native to LightWave 3d, no 3rd party plugins. Yours to pick apart!

01_theCommute
Full scene of the final render (additional elements were comped and graded in After Effects).

02_InstancePopup
A breakout scene of the instanced hills. Uses a gradient in the Instance Generator to control clipping and control scaling.

03_ InstancePopup_altFalloff
An alternative method to clip instances using a Falloff node.

04_SplineControl_valueExpression
A slightly simplified scene of The Commute. In the Graph Editor, a simple expression is used on the wheel_inst nulls Z position. Handy when used in conjunction with Spline Control (hint: “Value+”): it references a spline controlled animation and adds itself so you don’t have to keep copy/pasting keys and offsetting if the animation changes. Also means you can reuse the same expression multiple times.

Not yet tested in LW2023, made using LW2020.0.2 on a Mac. It should also work in earlier versions that support Spline Control and Instancing, although the lighting and surfacing may look different from my rendered examples.

NB Could be just applicable to LW2020/MacOS Ventura users - under Render Properties, maximum threads is set to 8. Anything above this crashes my machine when turning on VPR. Also, possibly another Mac only issue, adding an Environment light will cause an instant crash. If anyone knows why then please share - hopefully resolved in future updates :D
