LightWave 3d: Paper Scroll Rig
Paper scroll scene files, containing rigs to roll up, or unwind geometry via displacements. Easily applicable for carpets, banners etc.
For LW2019+, this uses LW’s native nodal displacements.
To add your own model there’s a couple of options.
1. Modeler Copy/paste your model and replace the one supplied
2. Layout Select the Scroll object, open Properties.Copy/paste the displacements to your object.
Simply re-position the Start and End “Pos” nulls.
Scenes supplied
scroll_basic
Defaults to a mirror setup displacing the top and bottom of the page using basic null controls. To turn off the mirror, select the Scroll object and open Properties. Turn off the “base” displacement to roll in one direction.
scroll_manual
Two sets of nulls for independent control of the top and bottom of the page.
Poster_unwind, poster_reveal
The rendered scenes at the top of the explainer.
Please note these renders were composited and graded in After Effects.
Null Controls
Start Pos
Z: start of the bend, position and animate to suit
To curl a corner (see poster_reveal.lws for a demo) X: use to place the curl when adding H rotation
H: amount of curl (don’t rotate too far!)
End Pos
Animation not necessary, move it’s Z a little further out from the edge of your object.
Bend
X: moves out the edges to simulate an uneven packing
Y: the amount of bend in the paper. Use in conjunction with Z
Z: controls the tightness of wrap when bending. You will probably need to animate this value along with the Bend Y to stop any overlaps
If you need to move the page I’d recommend creating an instance of it and moving that, leaving the page where it is and turning it off from the render. See “poster_reveal.lws” for an example.
Hope you find it useful :D
